Foreword by the Executive Director
Connie Lam / Executive Director, Hong Kong Arts Centre

Documentary film is not yet a popular genre in local cinema although for 20 years ifva award has been cultivating talents in this area such as Jessy Tsang, Cheung Hung and Cheung King-wai, etc.  In addition to competition, award and commissioning, introducing documentary films with interesting themes will also be a good way to promote this genre as well as to inspire new productions.

Both Watermark and The Human Scale have been filmed in different cities, reflecting human's relationships with nature and man-made city planning respectively. Dancing in Jaffa and Trash Dance portray how dance can narrow the gap between people and even help resolve class and race struggles.  Documentaries with sufficient research and global vision are unusual in Hong Kong as it is difficult to get funding and this is the same for documentaries on dance.  Hope the screening of these documentaries will not only inspire film makers and audience but also film investors.
