With an aim to promote public interest in arts and culture and nurture young artistic talents, The Wharf Group organised the seventh edition of “The Wharf Hong Kong Secondary School Art Competition” in September 2017, which received overwhelming response from across 18 districts in Hong Kong.

All winners have been selected through careful judging and screening. The panel of adjudicators comprises renowned art professionals in Hong Kong – renowned art educator Mr. Kurt Chan Yuk Keung; Ms. Susanna Chung, Head of Learning and Participation, Asia Art Archive; Mr. Thomas Dang Vu, Director of Fine Arts, Savannah College of Art and Design Hong Kong; renowned artist Dr. Kan Tai Keung; Dr. Koon Wai Bong, Assistant Professor of Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University; Ms. Connie Lam Suk Yee, Executive Director, Hong Kong Arts Centre; renowned artist Mr. Mok Yat San and Ms. Anita Wong Yin Fong, Curator, University Museum and Art Gallery of The University of Hong Kong. The artworks cover diverse topics, and the results of the Competition fully demonstrate Hong Kong young generation’s innovation and creativity in arts and thinking.

This edition of the Competition is held in association with the Hong Kong Arts Centre to celebrate the Centre’s 40th anniversary. Entrants could choose to create based on the theme “Arts at the Centre” for a chance to win a special award in addition to the regular competition awards. The top 54 entrants and Special Award recipients are invited to join a “Junior Docent Training Programme” curated by the Hong Kong Arts Centre which includes a series of interactive activities led by art professionals. Apart from being awarded cash and book vouchers, the top 18 winners are invited to join an Arts and Cultural Exchange Tour to Japan, visiting the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, one of the largest art festivals in the world which is held once every three years to broaden their horizons. They are also eligible to apply for scholarships with Wharf to pursue their studies in creative art.

In order to share their talents, gain recognition and appreciation from the public, the top 18 and selected entries were exhibited at Wharf’s three shopping malls and will be exhibited at the prestigious Pao Galleries at the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Wharf will continue to actively promote the development of local arts to unearth the new generation of local artists with high potential.
