London Tate Modern and IMAX, New York MoMa, Athens Acropolis… These are just a few of the countless major international venues that the multimedia performance “Rebirth of a Nation by DJ Spooky” has gone to. Finally, the Hong Kong Arts Centre is bringing to Hong Kong the Asian Premiere of this world-class performance of the trendsetting “DJ mix applied to cinema”, a three-screen and surround-sound live remix of the first Hollywood blockbuster The Birth of a Nation made in 1915. A performance standing at the frontline of cinematic trend, which was first commissioned by the Lincoln Center Festival (New York City, USA), Rebirth of a Nation is an audiovisual mix of modern cool and classic grace.

DJ Spooky is a global visionary DJ/VJ and renowned video artist and writer. He has worked alongside top-notch international personalities including Ryuichi Sakamoto (Academy Award-winning musician) , Yoko Ono (Recipient of Hiroshima Art Prize), Kronos Quartet (Grammy Award-winning string quartet), Steve Reich (Grammy Award-winning electronic music pioneer).

The Birth/ Rebirth of a Nation: A Reflection on American Politics, Society and Film Culture

The Birth of a Nation (1915) has marked a milestone in film history with its unprecedented techniques in film narration during its time of release. These techniques include deep focus and facial close-up. It is the first Hollywood blockbuster and the first moving picture to be shown at the White House in history. Since its release, it has invigorated numerous controversies. The seminar will centre on the reasons behind the far-reaching influences of The Birth of a Nation on the technique of filmic narration in history, and how the concept of American “rebirth” is expressed aesthetically and politically in DJ Spooky’s audiovisual remix of The Birth of a Nation.

Master Class and DJ Demonstration (FINISHED)

DJ Spooky expounds the concept of Sampling Digital Music of his edited Sound Unbound, explores the role of sound and digital media in an information-based society and talks about the relation between contemporary art and composition. He reconstructs the history of sound and recorded media by analysing the ideas of Brian Eno, Moby, Steve Reich, Chuck D and other artists and writers and even dabbles at the connection of Islamic culture and Hip Hop in discussion of how music, art and literature blur the line to integrate. Supplemented with rare sound and found footage, the text and art are stated in detail in the vein of multimedia. DJ Spooky will also demonstrate the technique of DJ.
