Key tasks of film editing are to “cut” and to “link” images. But how do we catch the “essence”, how can we achieve our own styles? With this master class, you are going to have the chance to learn these from Taiwanese editing expert Chen Po-wen. Chen will be instructing on a one-to-one basis on skills of editing long and short films. Chen is also going to share his thoughts on documentary filmmaking, film editing in the “Cut-edge Film Editing” seminar. Apart from these, a post-seminar tea chat will be organised to allow participants more space to share creative ideas and build up networks for future projects. Applicants have to hand in at least one short film (completed or in production), or selected footage from a feature length production to facilitate the shortlisting. Chen Po-wen’s name might not be familiar to a lot of Hong Kong film fans, but you must have had watched a number of films he edited, which includes award-winning features like A Brighter Summer Day, Seediq Bale, A Confucian Confusion, Darkness & Lights, Yi Yi, and documentaries like Viva Tonal: The Dance Age, The Red Leaf Legend, and How High is The Mountain. Born in 1953, Chen graduated from the Broadcast and Television Department of the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts). He began his editing career in 1979 and has stayed in this job for over thirty years. He has edited over 200 feature films with profound skills and experience.
Documentary Film Funding Workshop
Date & Time: 18/03 3pm-6pm
Venue: agnès b. CINEMA
Ticket: $150
Conducted in Cantonese
To produce a documentary is never an easy task, nor is it limited to artistic creation alone. Before starting off to film a subject, considerations have to be made on partnerships, sponsors, fund-gauging proposals, budgeting, etc. If such pre-production planning is smooth, the shooting itself will be more easily realised. This funding workshop targets at equipping participants with knowledge on the various directions and processes of fundraising. Clara Choi, Deputy Head of Public & Current Affairs TV, Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), representative of CNEX and Jacob Wong, Director of Hong Kong - Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), plus film directors Cheuk Cheung and Mandrew Kwan who has formerly succeeded in gaining sponsors, will be invited to talk about their hands-on experience.
Special Offer: Those who are keen on acquiring comprehensive skills on documentary filmmaking, do take note of a special discount offer of HK$250 to cover both the “Cut-edge Editing Seminar by Chen Po-wen” and the “Documentary Film Funding Workshop”.
