Birdcalls in the Floating World

Date & Time:
22/05/2012 - 28/05/2012  From 10:00 am to 8:00 pm

Birdcalls in the Floating World is a bi-solo exhibition of renowned contemporary Chinese sculptors Xiang Jing and Qu Guangci.  “Floating World” here refers to our current living world.  Xiang Jing’s and Qu Guangci’s sculptures portray various kinds of Chinese characters and depict the special psycho-condition of them today.  The artistic style of the two artists may look different; however, their works both reflect a same general kind of calmness, as if being an outside observer of society.

Xiang Jing’s artworks are concerned with the experience of growth, female body, and the comfort of the individual.  Through different stages of art creation, she gradually sums up her view and interpretation of human nature.  She brings to the exhibition her artwork series — “I See Fortune”, where the audience will see together with the artist different scenarios of “fortune”.  The audience will find that “fortune” often does not appear in “an appearance of fortune”.  While in Qu Guangci’s “Twittering” series, a naturalness can be seen as the artist has already escaped from the constraint of the social system during the time he created the artworks.  Living in the floating world, the characters with rough heart, cool face, and a fat body appear proudly on the leafless tree branches.

In 2010, Xiang Jing and Qu Guangci established the brand of X+Q (Xi Qi) with their initials. It initiates a new culture of independently artist-run art branding.  In this exhibition, X+Q will bring along the limited edition gifts and design products which derive from the sculptures of the artists. Portion of the proceeds will be donated to Hong Kong Arts Centre for their arts development fund.

The GQ Magazine gives media support to this exhibition; while the luxury automobile brand Jaguar provides its passionate sole sponsorship. The limited edition of the XJ model car will be provided for artistic crossover.
