Art actually is all around in Arts Centre. Pay a visit to any of the visitor toilets from the basements to the fifth floor, you may mistake it for a new exhibition room. They are in fact Arty Privy – Hong Kong Arts Centre 30th Anniversary Designer Toilet Series. Under the supervision of voluntary designers Anderson Lee, Derrick Tsang, Julia Lau, Ida Sze + Billy Chan, and Bernard Chang, the 5 toilets are renovated from the ground up. Ideas about Arts Centre, art, and toilets are developed and realized; visual coordinates are turned up-side-down and spaces are re-distributed, challenging visitors’ preconception and flexibility of day-to-day routines – the art of the privy. Besides, numerous references to the extraordinary architecture by Dr. Tao Ho 30 years ago generate inter-generation dialogue and critically enriches the Centre’s legacy.

A renovation project for the public restrooms located on the gallery floors of the Hong Kong Arts Centre which was inspired by the imagery of Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain piece. Dried straw is the primary ceiling material, from which lighting pendants emerge as surrealistic flowers growing upside down from the ceiling; ivy-like conduits grow into adjacent surfaces to become wall sconces; the dark sheet vinyl floor reflects the light sources and becomes the ‘sky’, while the straw ceiling is the ‘ground’.
