【Comix Home Base】Comix & the City Exhibition cum Comics, Animation & Life Talk

Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC), awarded the five-year contract by the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) for the Main Operator of Mallory Street/Burrows Street Revitalisation Project ("Art Community"), will turn a cluster of 10 pre-war Grade 2 historic buildings into a Comix Home Base (CHB). Upon the completion of building refurbishment work by the URA in 2013, the HKAC will operate in this new hub by curating and organising comics and animation related programmes, and promoting Hong Kong and overseas comics and animation creations through education, retail, documentation, etc. This will be the first arts and cultural centre that is dedicated to comics and animation cultures in Hong Kong.

As a prelude to the official opening of the CHB in Wanchai in 2013 and with the support from the URA, a group of prominent local comics artists and animators will participate in “Comix Home Base – ‘Comix & the City’ Exhibition and ‘Comics, Animation & Life’ Talk”. The series of events serve as a platform for the public, particularly those work and reside in Wanchai, to discover the characteristics and the latest development of comics and animation. The exhibition will feature interviews with people in the Wanchai community about their expectations on the CHB and how the CHB can contribute to Hong Kong’s arts and cultural creative industries.

The “Comix & the City” Exhibition includes works by different generations of locally born and raised artists/groups; that is to let our audience discover the distinct styles of different comics and animations from different times. These artists/groups will share their urban inspirations and snippets in artistic creation with our audience. Based on their intimate observation of the community and daily interactions with people from different local districts, these artists have illuminated the city’s many hidden charms. They include Tony Wong Yuk-long, Ma Wing-shing, Lee Wai-chun, Zunzi, Li Chi-tak, Craig Au Yeung, Lee Chi-ching, Alice Mak Kar-bik, Ted Yeung Hok-tak, Bigsoil, Siuhak, Kongkee, Stella So, Albert Sung, Rainbow Leung, Postgal Workshop, Ling Yeung + Kit Lau, wongeorge, Wong Ka-chuen + Mak Weng-keh, Chui Chun-yu + Chan Wai-yee, Antonio Wong, Winnie Choi and Croxx A Workshop, close to 30 artists participate in this exhibition.

The “Comics, Animation & Life” Talk, hosted by four young local comics and animation artists - Kongkee, Stella So, Rainbow Leung and Albert Sung will let the audience know how the artists brew their artistic essences in their comics and animations, bringing their audience’s attention to the distinctive qualities of the different areas of Hong Kong, reminding us to pay closer attention to the loveliness of the people, happenings and sceneries around us.

More to surprise you! The CHB will have its official website (www. comixhomebase.com.hk),  designed and programmed by renowned local design workshop Rice 5. With Rice 5’s famous animation and interactive design, the website will introduce the CHB as well as Hong Kong comics and animation cultures to the Hong Kong public with great fun! There will also be the grand introduction to the CHB Ambassador Comix Bubble, whose adorable and cute image has been designed by the omnipresent local Hong Kong comics artist Siuhak. Stay tuned!

About the Comix Home Base
Comix Home Base (CHB), an Art Community to cultivate comics and animation inspiration and creativity, will be established for the Hong Kong public in Wanchai in 2013.
The CHB is a cluster of pre-war Grade 2 historic buildings located between Mallory Street and Burrows Street in Wanchai (close to the popular comics and animation shopping destination Oriental 188 Shopping Centre). After the Urban Renewal Authority’s refurbishment of the buildings in 2013, the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) will be the CHB’s Main Operator for five years. The HKAC will curate and organise comics and animation related programmes, and promote Hong Kong and overseas comics and animation creations through education, retail, documentation, etc. As the first Art Community to preserve and promote comics and animation arts and culture in Hong Kong, the CHB will be an important landmark in Hong Kong’s arts and cultural history.

Not only will the CHB be comics and animation artists and fans’ gathering point, it will also be an important platform for interaction and exchange between Hong Kong and overseas comics and animation arts.
