Women, Sexuality and History: Screening and discussion with filmmaker Crystal Kwok
Crystal will be Hong Kong for an intimate discussion on women, sexuality, and history. She will present her debut feature film, "The Mistress” (1999) to reflect on what Hong Kong was like twenty years ago and how sexuality is portrayed through a woman’s lens. She will also introduce her current documentary project, “Unruly Chinese Women” about race-relations and the woman’s position in the American south during segregation.
After a vibrant career in the Hong Kong film industry as an actress, filmmaker, and controversial talk show host, Kwok is now living in Hawaii where she is pursuing her PhD in Performance Studies at the University of Hawaii. Her film, “The Mistress” won the Audience Choice Award at Deauville Asian Film Festival and was nominated for best original score at the Golden Horse Awards. Her current documentary project has been awarded a grant by the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) to secure distribution throughout the U.S.
