A legend on one’s feet
Yuli is the nickname given to Carlos Acosta by his father Pedro, who considers him the son of Ogun, an African warrior god. Legendary Cuban ballet dancer Carlos Acosta has been electrifying the world with his cogent expressions, and became the first black artist to dance Romeo in Romeo and Juliet on the stage of The Royal Ballet in London, where he was principal dancer for 17 years. In this spectacular biopic that charts Yuli’s journey of becoming a superstar, Acosta plays himself, gracing his own story with intricate emotions.
Born into an impoverished neighbourhood around Havana, Yuli flees discipline and education, and enjoys dancing in the streets. Worried about Yuli’s future, Pedro enrolls him in the National Dance School, the top dance school in Cuba, to study ballet. In the face of a complex family background, personal struggles and national turmoil, Yuli forges his career as an admired ballet dancer on the international stage.
