The Wei and Jin Dynasties were a period which was full of wars, divisions and darkness, and yet they were also important moments for literature, philosophy and personal awakening.

It takes courage to be independent. Personality traits are not very tolerated in the traditional group culture. The dance theatre "To Pass On" is based on the characters from the classical Chinese notebook novel “A New Account of Tales of the World” - “The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove” as the starting point of the choreography.

It is said that Ji Kang, the spiritual leader of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, said before he died, “ Guangling Verse is over now!”. Things changed, and the sound of the piano dissipated. However, Guangling did not completely disappear. Perhaps Ji Kang did not expect his deeds have been passed on since then. The two choreographers tried to downplay the gender of the Seven Sages, and highlight the personalities, such as Ji Kang's arrogance, Ruan Ji's grief and anger, Liu Ling's drunken madness, etc., to explore how they showed their true colours through actions in troubled times. 

Life is as short as dust and dew; but the life and the movement of the sun, moon and stars are so long.

“The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove” represents lonely faces that have rarely appeared in the long history, which is in strong contrast with the traditional group culture. Perhaps they are farther away from the masses. However, due to this sense of distance, their unique existence could be reflected and thus has been passed on since then.
