A crossover between art and gastronomy that warms the heart

All proceeds to benefit Priscilla’s Home at Fu Hong Society

Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) and cookbook author Dominica Yang have collaborated for the first time to publish Mum’s Kitchen – Back to Basics, a crossover between art and gastronomy, to embrace the spirit of ‘Art for Passion, Art for Life, Art for All’. A carefully curated collection featuring 30 Western, Chinese and Southeast Asian dishes of the author’s mother’s best loved recipes, alongside Yang’s recent family favourites and ‘sweet’ must-haves. All proceeds from the publication will benefit Priscilla’s Home at Fu Hong Society.

Love has no boundaries and goes beyond age, health, race and gender. The art of cooking embodies some of the most transformational moments of love: from the preparation of food that takes the care and attention, to the enjoyment of food that fills the stomach, love raises the spirit, and strengthens the special bond not just between mother and daughter, but also passes down from generations to generations. The cookbook Mum’s Kitchen – Back to Basics not only pays tribute to Yang’s late mother, but also helps to support and spread the word for Fu Hong Society’s services for those with disabilities, more importantly it is a product of love of cooking, just like a "love letter" to her late mother.

Connie Lam, Executive Director of the HKAC, says: “The publication of Mum’s Kitchen – Back to Basics resonates with the HKAC’s mission of ‘Art for Passion, Art for Life, Art for All’. More than just a cookbook that pays homage to Yang’s mother, the author had also expressed her wish for its publication to become an alternative platform for supporting local emerging artists. HKAC is delighted to have invited our local comic artist Tweety Bao to participate in this project, as well as designer Ray Lau from Tomorrow Design Office, who is an alumni of the Hong Kong Art School (HKAC’s education arm). This cookbook also reminds us of the appreciation of art on the dining table, which has the power to warm our hearts and tighten family bonds.”

Frankie Tsui, Executive Director of Fu Hong Society, says: “In Mum’s Kitchen – Back to Basics, Dominica Yang has not just shared some favorite recipes from her mum, but also the love and memories that run deep in her family. This also marks a meaningful occasion with all proceeds donated to our non-funded services, celebrating Yang’s family’s tradition in the care and support for the well-being of disabled persons, as well as Fu Hong Society.”

Mum’s Kitchen – Back to Basics is available on sale at the HKAC Art Shop and online (hkacartshop.store);  outlet of Fu Hong Society’s Social Enterprises - Madam Hong Care and many bookstores including The Commercial Press (H.K.); Joint Publishing; Chung Hwa Book Company and Cosmos Books, Kelly and Walsh, Bookazine and Towngas Customer Centres.

About Hong Kong Arts Centre

Hong Kong Arts Centre - Art for Passion, Art for Life, Art for All

Since 1977, the Hong Kong Arts Centre (HKAC) has been a platform for nurturing and supporting artists, and infusing art into everyday life. Its unique arts and educational programmes aim to make the arts accessible for all.

The HKAC believes in the transformational power of art for people from all walks of life. Established for more than four decades, the HKAC endeavours to bring arts to the people of Hong Kong – by presenting programmes for visual arts, performing arts, moving images and media arts, comics and animation. Our other areas also cover arts education, conferences, festivals, public art and community projects. All with the vision and mission of engaging and inspiring creativity in the Hong Kong community.

In 2000, HKAC founded its education arm, Hong Kong Art School (HKAS). The HKAS provides award-bearing programmes to nurture artists and art practitioners, as well as short enrichment courses for the general public.

The HKAC aspires to engage everyone in the community to become an active participant in the arts - as an enthusiast, an artist or a patron.

In 2022, the HKAC will celebrate its 45th anniversary. Let’s continue to embrace ‘Art for Passion, Art for Life, Art for All’, and share the inspiration.
