Jockey Club ICH+ Innovative Heritage Education Programme by Lingnan University & Hong Kong Art School (a division of Hong Kong Arts Centre) The Second Annual Showcase 6 Intangible Cultural Heritage Art Pieces by over 1,000 Students Spark an Innovative Dialogue between Tradition and Modernity

Traditional culture penetrates to everywhere with historical footprint and embodies the local spirit and identity symbolization. Hong Kong's unique intangible cultural heritage has a significant value, and it has injected blood and soul into inheritance and innovation. To pass on this legacy, one should not simply leave it in the museum, but should integrate it into our daily lives, hence sparking a dialogue between tradition and modernity. Funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the Jockey Club ICH+ Innovative Heritage Education Programme is jointly launched by Lingnan University & Hong Kong Art School (a division of Hong Kong Arts Centre). The programme has enjoyed a successful collaboration last year showcasing over 1,000 students’ artwork at Sam Tung Uk Museum and they are back in the city this year. It continues to promote a series of different activities, introducing the concepts and methods of conservation and inheritance to the public, creating an atmosphere for more people to care about and understand intangible cultural heritage. The second annual exhibition will be showcased with three distinctive themes in the heart of Causeway Bay: Urban Sky at Hysan Place, Pak Sha Road and Sharp Street East from July 2 to August 2, 2020. With over 1,000 art pieces by teachers and students, the exhibition boasts revolutionary content, hoping to strike a chord with people of different ages and backgrounds. There are also a series of pop-up workshops, multiple guided tours and even the first music gig “ICH+ X House Music Series”, which is presented by The Hong Kong Art School. It allows people to find a sense of belonging through understanding our cultural heritage and innovative thinking.

A Collision between tradition and modernity

6 intangible cultural heritage art pieces generate a dialogue in exciting new ways

The Jockey Club ICH+ Innovative Heritage Education Programme searches for cultural elements and spiritual values that communicates with the current era and society, hoping to bring the cultural heritage back to the forefront. In its second year, by integrating tradition and innovation according to what’s happening nowadays, and with a compatible attitude no less, this programme tops itself by inviting traditional masters and contemporary artists to hold classes together. Through material, space and dialogue, the programme spares no effort to bring traditional handicrafts and folk arts into the modern world, and by conversion, collision and learning, more citizens will participate and hence, breathing new life into the intangible cultural heritage.

For an entire month, the exhibition this year will display the works of 6 intangible cultural heritages by instructors and students, including: sugar blowing, dough figurine crafting, wood furniture crafting, paper crafting, cheongsam sewing and paper cutting. The different themes of three locations are “Zau Wai Gung (周圍貢), Urban Sky at Hysan Place”, “Soeng Lai Tau (上嚟唞), Pak Sha Road” and “Nei Maai Tai (匿埋睇), Sharp Street East”, and employs the use of animals and plants for the blown sugar technique and dough figurine crafting. Different materials are also added in the wooden furniture; while innovative clothes are produced the same way they make cheongsam. The playful and innovative ideas from the students really help inject new energy to an otherwise traditional frame of mind, allowing traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art more opportunities to shine. Also, the exhibition on Sharp Street East is particularly special as the art works fuse light with film exhibitions.

During the exhibition, the masters, contemporary artists and student representatives of the intangible cultural heritage will also host the workshop to the public. There are also multiple guided tours and even the crossover music gig - “ICH+ X House Music Series”, where the public can enjoy and understand the essence of the programme, highlighting the diversity and tolerance of society through the eyes of the cultural heritage. A number of art pieces will be scattered throughout Causeway Bay, and the gigs will also reflect the styles of art in the three locations by playing various genres, immersing the city in the heritage atmosphere and allowing us all to feast our eyes. The exhibition also foretells the additional key heritage courses in the coming year, including: glazed porcelain production, white iron appliance production and wicker steamer production, in hopes to pass on the traditional arts of Hong Kong.

The second annual exhibition is more refined in terms of the specifications of the exhibits and the way they display. For the first time ever, the “ICH+ WhatsApp’s Stickers” and a "ICH+ Education Online Gallery”, where traditional art can be displayed through interactive modern technology, cementing the intangible cultural heritage’s status in the contemporary art world.
