【Hong Kong Arts Centre 】presents Welcome to the Artist Home! Artist Home Base Finale Exhibition 2012-2014
【Hong Kong Arts Centre】is delighted to present Welcome to the Artist Home! Artist Home Base Finale Exhibition 2012-2014. The exhibition will showcase artworks by overseas artists who participated in our artist-in-residence programme, Artist Home Base. The opening ceremony successfully took place this evening (September24, 2014), and the exhibition will take place from September 25 until October 12, 2014at the G7 Centre, Wing Lee Street.
With Artist Home Base we wanted to project through art the foreign perspective of Hong Kong with the intentions to revitalise its underrated view of its own people. In 2012, the Hong Kong Arts Centre was engaged by the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) to run an artist-in-residence programme by using renovated “Tang Lau” in No.5 Wing Lee Street, Sheung Wan. That became our Artist Home Base. It is a programme aiming at visiting overseas artists and art practitioners for exchanges on art and culture. The residency period ranges from one week to three months, and resident artists are required to create an artwork or an artistic response about the building and the Wing Lee Street neighbourhood during their residential stay. Through its two years of operation, the Artist Home Base has accommodated 95 overseas artists and art groups in total. These artists were from all around the world, including various Asian and European countries, as well as North America.
Through residing in “Tang Lau”, overseas artists were given the opportunities to embrace local life in Hong Kong, they familiarised themselves with neighbours and they saw Hong Kong from a different perspective. As a result these experiences became the sources of inspiration for their artistic responses and added the element of authenticity to the works they produced, and such works will be showcased in the exhibition.
The Artist Home Base Finale Exhibition comprises 18 pieces of artworks by 23 artists in response to their experience in Hong Kong. The works include writing, paintings, videos, photography and multimedia works. It is a collection of self-reflection, comparison and contrast, interpretation and reinterpretation of their unique experiences.
Ms. Connie Lam, Executive Director of the HKAC, remarked, “We hope that by borrowing the “fresh-eyes” of the overseas artists, the exhibition will encourage visitors to rethink aspects of our “normal” lives and to consider how the simplest of things to us could be the greatest source of inspiration to a foreign artist. We would like the people of Hong Kong to once again appreciate the uniqueness of our city. Something we have long taken for granted. In this exhibition, we invite every resident of Hong Kong to join us and celebrate our great city once more. “
