Sand Painting: Ma Wing Cheung (Ma Chai)

Ma Chai is a self-taught sand painting artist with over 10 years of experience and a certificate in Art Therapy (Elementary level). He uses sand painting as a medium for devotion and mental therapy, combining his faith with art.

He has facilitated sand painting therapy groups with various voluntary organisations such as Castle Peak Hospital, Arts with the Disabled Association, and St. James’ Settlement to support individuals with intellectual and physical disability, autism, and recovering from mental illness. Sand painting provides an outlet for them to express their feelings and as a pathway to overcome difficulties.

In recent years, Ma Chai has ventured into the area of parent-child bonding by writing picture books to explore dreams with children. His works include ‘Ban Ban, you are very good!’ and ‘Miracles comes in Three’.

He has participated in many sand painting art projects over the years including ‘Restpiration’ music show sponsored by HKJC in 2022, ‘The Moment’ Mindfulness TV show by TVB in 2022, ‘Korea-Hong Kong sand art exchange meeting’ in collaboration with Korea sand art artist Sandartworld in 2024 and 36 days art mission journey in Uganda in 2024.
